Get Out and Forget the FOMO

7:40 AM

I have something this fall-it's called FOMO (hint: FearOfMissingOut). I spend a good amount of time on Facebook,  Pinterest, etc, etc and my feed is becoming filled up with Autumn bliss, and I'm not feeling it. I barely have time to run out and get mocha, much less go to the pumpkin patch and pick pumpkins.
The world makes "out-there" look awesome. "Fall is all about orange and coffee and sweaters and corn fields and fun." And we want to experience that because it looks amazing. And when we don't we feel let down. Nothing is like pictures on Facebook portray.
Listen- forget the commercials showing happy families eating pumpkin pie, ignore the feed on facebook showing all your friends in the corn maze or drinking mochas, and dare to be different and get away from the internet and the wishing you could have a season like everyone you know.
I read a blog post here  and I'm taking the challenge. I'm going to send 31 hugs this October. This isn't exactly a fall thing. It's not going viral, it's probably not going to make the news, but I believe that we need to dare to be different and stop looking around us, freaking out that our fall is so different from everyone else.
•Dare to read the blog post and send 31 hugs
•Dare to go to the library and stick happy notes inside your favorite books
•Dare to make your own mocha at home-forget Star Bucks-and spend time in the Word at the park
•Dare to take an internet break for a week and make a list of seven things you can do to be a Light to those around you
•Dare to commit to read a whole book of the Bible this month
•Dare to only listen to Christian music this fall
•Dare to volunteer
•Dare to go to church at least twice in October if you don't already
•Dare to call a friend you haven't seen in ages
•Dare to start a blog
•Dare to forget what everyone else's fall looks. Take in the leaves, take a hike, sip tea, read mushy romance...dare to forget what everyone else is doing and commit to asking God to change you, giving you direction, always drawing you to Him.
FOMO is something we do and not something God promotes, because He doesn't give us second best. He doesn't give us plans that will make you miss out. Forget the fear of missing out and embrace God's plans and His love.
Embrace your life and this season as God has it-not as the world is saying it should be.

You're right-we are sooo blessed when we stop looking at what everyone else has and see what and who God has placed in our lives.

  4. Oh boy, you summed it up well - we get caught up in crafting the perfect experience, seeking to mirror what social media portrays, that we forget to actually live it! I'm guilty. But your post is inspiring. I want to dare too - dare to get out and be a blessing. You have some great suggestions there as well. I think I'm going to try some of them. :)

I like your take on FOMO. It can come across as a selfish thing: 'I don't want to miss out.' But the way you linked it back to God's love, and that He never gives second best.. That was so refreshing and encouraging to read. Also, I'm blown away to see 31 Hugs mentioned in this post. It boggles my mind to think that God could use that concept in the lives of people all over the world. I hope you have a wonderfully adventurous autumn, and thanks again for this post. xx

    1. Thanks so much for your inspiration and encouragement Lauren-I love your blog and am more then happy to get the word out about 31 Hugs.
You're right about FOMO and how the term can easily be so selfish. We look around and see what we don't have and often times miss what the Lord has already given us.
You are a blessing Jessica. ♥
