Define Love. Part 1

7:41 AM

Lately I've been looking around at the world and I wonder... what is love? Does that world even care anymore if love is real or not or simply fulfilling its own desires?
The world sees love as what I can get out of the relationship-sex is probably #1 on the list if we're talking boyfriend/girlfriend, but there's also drugs or seemingly harmful things money or status.
I see the world saying "gimme gimme! What can I get out of being in your life?"
Just watch commercials during the NFL Superbowl and I'm sure it won't take long.
Heck, nothing says you'll be loved then getting a new car or giving your kids the long awaited legos.
But what is true love? Why does love make me feel so sick when I see people sleeping together simply...well they love each other-why does it matter they're sixteen and going behind their parents' backs? Or befriending the girl at church because she dresses nice and has the job you want...so can anyone say connections?
Or what about helping a hurting person (all in the name of love) just so you can get up in church and say you helped someone not commit suicide and can you get an Amen? It became more of a project then a person. And you didn't mean it to be that way at first.

.
There is different types of love I've come to find...
love between a husband and a wife
love between family members
two friends
a boyfriend and his girl
when a girl says, "Oh I just love that really handsome guy *insert name of famous man actor here*....
and God (God is love ~ 1 John 4:8). The only love I ever want to truly, 100% put my trust in. The only one who won't let me down.

So what does this love mean? What does it mean to love someone - not just a spouse or a significant other in general?
In all honesty I think the word "love" can be easily thrown around - too much so (but that is for a different post).
Here is how the lovely dictionary defines love...

love

1. a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person.

2.a feeling of warm personal  attachment or deep affection, as for parent, child,

or friend.

Though the dictionary has never failed to help me, this time I found it quite useless. Love is a feeling, but I feel that there is more to it. Love doesn't always come easy. A boyfriend can trip up, your sister isn't perfect, your pastor isn't perfect-in general life isn't perfect. If we see love as only a feeling it can seem fake. It is fake. With an expiration date. Something that will eventually die with time.

I see marriages fade and die out because "they just don't love each other anymore", people running because their hears are broken. I've seen girls post angrily on facebook because a friend has cussed them out and they tell them to go to...well let's not go there.
True love shouldn't be defined by the dictionary but by the only book I can put my 100% trust in.
Love is patient
Love is kind
Love does not envy, boast, or become proud
Love does not dishonor others
Love is not easily angered
Love does not constantly bring up the wrongs of others
Love is not evil, but loves truth
Love trusts, hopes, and perseveres
Love is not out to please itself

This comes from the Bible, dear readers. No one can be that all the time - no matter how hard to try. Like I said-people trip up. We try but still there'll be mess ups. Luckily though, there is one who is perfect.
Our Guide to love.
God showed love to others in the greatest example in all humanity. In His son.
And when Love died it rose again. Love couldn't be conquered by death. Love, when He fall, rose again like it says in Micah.
Love overcome death and lives on forever. Death cannot stop it. Pain cannot stop it.
And it's more then a feeling-Love is Jesus Christ.
And when we live love in our lives it's an action. Not just a feeling. It's actions, it's how we live our lives for God. It's serving others and not ourselves. It's not cussing the other guy out because of what they've done.
So...this is love.
And I can't possibly choose the definition from the dictionary. I can't choose a feeling because feelings change like a torrent in the sea. I've been hurt too much in my life to see Love as a fleeting feeling. I've had friends leave me without another word. I've been called "fat" by those I loved. I can't EVER say that Love is just a feeling because if so then I don't want it.
The trust Love never fails. Jesus will NEVER EVER fail us. He doesn't chew us out for being messed up human beings.
When we fall we shall rise.
Because of love.
And because Love is more then just a feeling.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away."
1 Corinthians 13:4-8
