Christy by Catherine Marshall: Book Review and Giveaway

6:57 AM

Hola readers!
I'm late to do another giveaway: again. Lovely.  This MUST stop becoming a habit!

About the book:
In the year 1912, nineteen-year-old Christy Huddleston leaves Asheville, North Carolina, to teach school in the Smoky Mountains - and comes to know and love the resilient people of the region, with their fierce pride, their dark superstitions, their terrible poverty, and their yearning for beauty and truth. But her faith will be severely challenged by trial and tragedy, and through two remarkable men - a preacher torn by doubt and a doctor whose wounded soul needs healing - she will grapple with the nature of love.

This book is timeless! I read it for the first time a few years ago with my mom and to get it again - for the 50th anniversary - I was really quite thrilled! If you've never read the book and enjoy Historical Fiction or enjoy Love Comes Softly on The Canadian West Saga, this book is for you. And honestly it's for anyone who enjoys a good, inspirational read that takes them beyond the novels they normally pick up.
It's based on a true story - the author's mother - and is the eyes of a school teacher in the mountains during the early 1900s. The writing style is simple, easy to understand, and the mountain-talk and way of life are accurate without becoming too confusing.
I've always loved the characters, the love triangle, and the thought-provoking themes as Christy grapples to understand her faith. The book may seem long to some (over 400 pages), but it HAS to be that long to display the story and its characters so well.
The ending is also perfection (if only the TV show had done so well!), and while this book goes in the Christian genre, it's a beautiful, not overly in your-face, Christian novel. Which, as always, I root for.
For a change of pace in life and through the eyes of someone my age who actually dared to make a difference - I think I enjoyed the book more now then I did as a young teen.
Highly recommend!

Below is the info from Litfuse for the giveaway (which, because I saw the schedule wrong, makes it too late to enter, I believe).

  2. Ah, I just read this book a couple of months ago, and it's so good! I want to reread it already. :) I feel like I relate to Christy's struggles a lot, and it was really refreshing to read a book that I felt portrayed Christianity authentically.

Also, a huge amen to your previous post about God giving us more than we can handle. It's only through times when we can't handle it on our own we grow in Him. Thanks for sharing truth! xx

    1. Oh that is awesome! Another cool thing about the book was, it resembles a lot of what my state looked like in that time period as well and how the people lived since we're in the mountains.

Thanks so much for commenting, Jessica!
