This book is timeless! I read it for the first time a few years ago with my mom and to get it again - for the 50th anniversary - I was really quite thrilled! If you've never read the book and enjoy Historical Fiction or enjoy Love Comes Softly on The Canadian West Saga, this book is for you. And honestly it's for anyone who enjoys a good, inspirational read that takes them beyond the novels they normally pick up.
It's based on a true story - the author's mother - and is the eyes of a school teacher in the mountains during the early 1900s. The writing style is simple, easy to understand, and the mountain-talk and way of life are accurate without becoming too confusing.
I've always loved the characters, the love triangle, and the thought-provoking themes as Christy grapples to understand her faith. The book may seem long to some (over 400 pages), but it HAS to be that long to display the story and its characters so well.
The ending is also perfection (if only the TV show had done so well!), and while this book goes in the Christian genre, it's a beautiful, not overly in your-face, Christian novel. Which, as always, I root for.
For a change of pace in life and through the eyes of someone my age who actually dared to make a difference - I think I enjoyed the book more now then I did as a young teen.
